Curator version supported from this article: 4.0
Learn here how to view asset metadata and edit asset metadata to help power your ability to search for and manage assets.
Overview
Curator metadata names can be compiled into and across multiple metadata views to help organize your metadata into groups, each serving a specific purpose. For example, in Clip Link and Curator for Adobe, the Filters Panel displays a metadata view containing configured metadata names. Another example occurs when creating a new Collection, where a configured metadata view will display metadata names that are populated on creation. In this case, logic or schemas can be applied to the metadata to determine the creation location.
Metadata categories can be used to organise sets of metadata names, improving searchability when viewing or filtering assets. For example, you might want to organise assets by Location (which could include metadata names like Continent, Country, or State), File Data (such as File Size or Duration), or Sports Information (such as Home Team, Away Team, or Referee).
Metadata names
A metadata name is a unique and customisable tag(s) you can create/amend in order to identify it. Below are the customizable options available when creating and editing metadata names:
- Name:
- What the metadata name is going to be called.
- Display Name
- The name that will be displayed when the metadata is viewed.
- Asset types:
- The asset types this metadata name can be applied to.
- Data type:
- The type of data applied:
Text
Int
Float
Datetime
Filepath
Uri
Boolean
Guid
Blob
Json
- The type of data applied:
- Make metadata name multi-value?
- Enables the metadata name to use multiple layout component options, allowing multiple choices to be selected for a single field (for example, allowing for multiple countries to be tagged when filling in a Country field). Tick to enable/untick to disable.
- Resources
- This allows you to select which data is provided for selection in the layout component option (below) from an external source. For example, you may wish to display a list of countries, or a list of appropriate sports-related items, from an external API.
- Category
- The category this metadata belongs to (see the Metadata Categories section below).
- Layout:
- The way in which the metadata is displayed:

-
Select Add new name.
-
Provide details for your new metadata name, then select Save.
To edit a metadata name:

Metadata views
- A Metadata view is made up of one or many metadata names grouped together.
- A Metadata view can be applied to a process in Curator (for example, all metadata listed under the SearchLevelView metadata view will be displayed by default when viewing metadata via the Filters panel).
Adding metadata to a view
Metadata can be added to a view by:
-
Navigating to the Metadata tab in Curator System Administrator.
-
A list of existing metadata names will be displayed.
Select a metadata view from the drop-down menu above the list of metadata to display all metadata from within that view.
-
You can add metadata to your selected metadata view by clicking on the drop-down at the bottom of the screen to expand it, then selecting a metadata name to add it.
-
You will be notified when the metadata has been added to the view successfully and your newly added metadata will be added to the list.
Metadata Categories
As of Curator 4.0, metadata categories can be manually added to metadata names in order to organise sets of metadata when viewing or filtering assets using the Filters panel.
For example, you might want to organise assets by Location (this category could contain a selection of areas or addresses), or People (for example, specific celebrities or sports players), or Duration.
Adding metadata to a new or existing category
All metadata will be added to the Default category by default. New and existing categories can be manually added and assigned in Curator System Administrator by:
-
Navigating to the Metadata tab.
-
With a metadata name selected, select a category from the Category drop-down on the right-hand side of the screen, OR select Add a new category from this drop-down to create a new category to add metadata to.
If you are creating a new category, you will need to name it and select Save.
- With your metadata successfully added to a new or existing category, select Save from the top right of the screen to save your changes.
Viewing metadata categories
When metadata has been assigned to a category, all relevant info relating to that metadata will be displayed beneath that category heading when viewing or filtering assets.
Toggling the View in categories option on and off when viewing asset metadata allows you to show/hide metadata categories.
Metadata categories will be displayed in alphabetical order, with the Default category showing at the bottom of the list.
All metadata added to the SearchLevelView metadata view (see the Metadata Views section above for more information) will be displayed by default when filtering assets using the Filters panel.
If metadata within this view have been added to a category, they will be displayed beneath a category heading, which can be expanded or collapsed to show/hide the metadata that sit within this category.
