# Edit asset metadata

This article explains how to edit asset metadata. To view metadata without editing it, see [Viewing asset metadata](/docs/viewing-asset-metadata).

#### In the [asset pane](/docs/asset-pane-thumbnail-views) and asset viewer

1. Select any field containing highlighted white text.
2. Make your changes in the pop-up box.
3. Click **Save** in the pop-up to confirm your edits.

#### From the asset pane (with one or multiple assets selected)

Right-click the selected asset(s) and select **Edit metadata**. For a collection, right-click it and select **Edit / View Metadata** > **Of the collection** or **Of the collection's assets**. Then, in the **Metadata** dialog:

1. Select the pencil icon beside the field you want to change.
2. Make your changes as required.

1. Select **Save** from the top-right corner.

A notification will appear confirming that the metadata has been successfully saved.

Other options in the **Metadata** dialog:

- Use the view drop-down to choose which metadata view is shown, and the filter box to find a field.
- **Show empty metadata** (available when one asset is selected) also lists fields that have no value.
- Turn on **Use assets in search results** to edit every asset your current search returns, not just the selected ones. For large edits you are asked to confirm before saving.
- Use the delete and undo buttons beside a field to clear its value or undo your change.
- **Cancel** closes the dialog. If you have unsaved changes, you can choose to continue editing or discard them.
